Kancheepuram Silk Sarees known for their richness and grand designing are produced in Kancheepuram a historical temple town 80kms away from Chennai. Typical traditional Kancheepuram silk sarees are of various types viz., silk saree with extra warp and extra weft designs, simple (zari) border and simple pallu silk sarees, Narrow zari with grand pallu with zari and jungla silk saree with jacquard designs of extra warp and extra weft having full gold ornamentation. The uniqueness of the Kancheepuram silk sarees is that these sarees are produced with Korvai borders where the weft threads do not enter into the border thus exhibiting solid borders. Pallu of the saree is woven separately from the main warp and then joined to the body by way of “PETNI” method special technique which differentiate these sarees from other silk sarees and are widely suitable for wedding and other auspicious occasions.
